Os residentes de longo prazo estão a ser alvo de acções de despejo e assistem impotentes ao desmoronamento gradual do seu quadro de vida, um quadro de boémia artística e de relacionamentos privilegiados porventura condenado à extinção nos tempos que vivemos hoje. A globalização fez com que as grandes metrópoles ficassem mais parecidas umas com as outras e cidades como Nova Iorque e Londres &lt;span&gt;tornaram-se &lt;/span&gt;muito caras. Deixou de haver lugar para a improvisação. &lt;em&gt;Displacement 2&lt;/em&gt; poderia chamar-se &lt;em&gt;The Party is Over&lt;/em&gt;. Nunca mais o &lt;em&gt;Chelsea Hotel&lt;/em&gt;  será a casa que Rita Barros retratou em 1999, no livro &lt;em&gt;Quinze Anos:&lt;/em&gt; &lt;em&gt;Chelsea Hotel.&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

En déboulonnant les idoles du marxisme hégémonique dans l&apos;intelligentsia parisienne, peut-être ai-je contribué à ce renverse­ment. Lorsque de bonnes plumes rejoignirent mes blasphèmes, Bernard-Henri Lévy et les médias bapti­sèrent un peu abruptement cette cohorte provisoire et volatile  «nouvelle  philosophie».  Si la science du matérialisme historique pliait sous les coups, force était de conclure que la volée de bois vert administrée, au nom de la philosophie, sur les adeptes de la dicta­ture du prolétariat n&apos;était pas aussi  frivole  qu&apos;on aimait à le dire.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

De celles qui permettent de comprendre, trente-cinq ans après, la jeunesse orange d&apos;Ukraine et les roses de Géorgie. De quoi moins s&apos;étonner quand Tbilissi ovationne Bush contre Poutine.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

Je suis romancier. »&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

Mon scepticisme à l&apos;égard de l&apos;&lt;em&gt;esprit &lt;/em&gt;d&apos;avant-garde ne pouvait pourtant rien changer à mon amour pour les &lt;em&gt;œuvres &lt;/em&gt;d&apos;art moderne. Je les aimais et je les aimais d&apos;autant plus qu&apos;elles étaient les premières victimes de la persécution stalinienne; Cenek, de &lt;em&gt;La Plaisanterie, &lt;/em&gt;fut envoyé dans un régiment dis­ciplinaire parce qu&apos;il aimait la peinture cubiste; c&apos;était ainsi, alors: la Révolution avait décidé que l&apos;art moderne était son ennemi idéologique numéro un même si les pauvres modernistes ne désiraient que la chanter et la célébrer ; je n&apos;oublierai jamais Konstantin Biebl : un poète exquis (ah, combien j&apos;ai connu de ses vers par cœur!) qui, communiste enthousiaste, s&apos;est mis, après 1948, à écrire de la poésie de propagande d&apos;une médiocrité aussi consternante que déchirante; un peu plus tard, il se jeta d&apos;une fenêtre sur le pavé de Prague et se tua; dans sa personne subtile, j&apos;ai vu l&apos;art moderne trompé, cocufié, martyrisé, assassiné, suicidé.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

Ce qui explique, peut-être, pourquoi je suis resté longtemps sourd à l&apos;art de Balzac et pourquoi le romancier que j&apos;ai particulièrement adoré fut Rabelais.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

La déesse appelée Actualité n&apos;avait aucune raison de braquer ses lumières sur lui. «Je ne suis pas un dissident», écrit-il. Il n&apos;était même pas un émigré. Il voyageait librement entre Belgrade et Paris. Il n&apos;était qu&apos;un «écrivain bâtard venu du monde englouti de l&apos;Europe centrale». Quoique englouti, ce monde avait été, pendant la vie de Danilo (mort en 1989), la condensation du drame européen. La Yougoslavie: une longue guerre sanglante (et victorieuse) contre les nazis; l&apos;Holocauste qui assassinait surtout les Juifs de l&apos;Eu­rope centrale (parmi eux, son père); la révolu­tion communiste, immédiatement suivie par la rupture dramatique (elle aussi victorieuse) avec Staline et le stalinisme. Si marqué qu&apos;il ait été par ce drame historique, il n&apos;a jamais sacrifié ses romans à la politique. Ainsi a-t-il pu saisir le plus déchirant: les destins oubliés dès leur nais­sance; les tragédies privées de cordes vocales. Il était d&apos;accord avec les idées d&apos;Orwell, mais com­ment aurait-il pu aimer &lt;em&gt;1984, &lt;/em&gt;le roman où ce pourfendeur du totalitarisme a réduit la vie humaine à sa seule dimension politique &lt;span&gt;exac&lt;/span&gt;tement comme le faisaient tous les Mao du monde? Contre cet aplatissement de l&apos;exis­tence, il appelait au secours Rabelais, ses drôle­ries, les surréalistes qui «fouillaient l&apos;inconscient, les rêves». Je feuillette son vieux livre et j&apos;en­tends sa voix forte et rude: «Malheureusement, ce ton majeur de la littérature française qui a commencé avec Villon a disparu.» Dès qu&apos;il l&apos;eut compris, il a été encore plus fidèle à Rabelais, aux surréalistes qui «fouillaient les rêves» et à la Yougoslavie qui, les yeux bandés, avançait déjà, elle aussi, vers la disparition.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

Os amigos de direita ti­nham desaparecido da políti­ca no 25 de Abril e a nova di­reita desconfiava do seu pen­dor igualitário.
